As of October 18, 2023, the House of Representatives is currently voting to elect a new speaker to replace Kevin McCarthy, who was removed two weeks ago. The vote for a new speaker comes on the heels of the ouster of Kevin McCarthy, which took place days after he struck a deal with Democrats to avert a government shutdown. Representative Jim Jordan of Ohio was nominated last week to be speaker after House Majority Leader Steve Scalise, R-La., withdrew from the race. However, several House Republicans oppose Jordan, who needs 217 of the 221 GOP caucus members to vote for him. Democrats are backing House Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries, of New York. The House remains deadlocked as Jim Jordan failed to secure enough votes to become speaker on the first ballot. The next vote is scheduled for Wednesday.
