The vas deferens is a long, muscular tube that is part of the male reproductive system. Its main function is to transport mature sperm from the epididymis to the urethra in preparation for ejaculation. Each testicle has a vas deferens that joins with seminal vesicle ducts to form ejaculatory ducts. The ejaculatory ducts move through the prostate gland, where they collect fluid to add to semen. The vas deferens is surrounded by the spermatic cord and is described as being fibromuscular, meaning that it is made of fibrous tissue and muscle tissue. The length of the vas deferens can range from 30 to 45 centimeters. The ampulla is an enlarged portion at the end of the vas deferens before it enters the prostate gland. The function of the ampulla is to act as a reservoir for sperm.
