The Israeli-Palestinian conflict is a long-standing dispute over competing claims to the Holy Land, which includes disputes over borders, Jerusalem, security, and Palestinian refugees. The conflict dates back to the end of the nineteenth century, but the current status quo began following Israels military occupation of the West Bank and Gaza in the 1967 Six-Day War. The conflict has been marked by violence, including wars, military offensives, and rocket attacks. The conflict has also resulted in the displacement of Palestinians and the establishment of Israeli settlements in the West Bank. The United States has traditionally tried to advance a diplomatic solution that would reconcile the competing claims of the two parties. Despite attempts to resolve the conflict, mutual distrust and significant disagreements remain over basic issues, and violence between the two sides has reached levels not seen since the last Palestinian uprising ended in 2005.
