The Coital Alignment Technique (CAT) is a sex position that is a variation of the missionary position and is designed to maximize clitoral stimulation during sexual intercourse. The focus of this position is less on thrusting and more on grinding, and it is achieved by the penetrating partner shifting forward so that their penis or dildo is pressed against their partners pelvis pointing down, rather than up. The key features of the CAT position are:
- The male partner moves upward along the womans body until his erection is pointing down, and the dorsal side of the penis is pressing against the clitoris.
- Sexual movement is focused in the pelvises, without leverage from the arms or legs.
- The rocking upward stroke (where the female leads) and downward stroke (where the male leads) of sexual movement builds arousal that partners let develop and peak naturally.
To perform the CAT position, the partner with a vulva should lie on their back with their legs comfortably spread, as they would in the missionary position. On top of them, the person doing the penetrating should raise themselves on their arms with their shoulders high and their back arched. The focus here is not on deep penetration, and the male partner may not insert much more than the head of his penis. The CAT position is best for people who are more likely to experience pleasure and/or orgasms through clitoral stimulation.
