Synthol, also known as site enhancement oil, is a substance used by bodybuilders to temporarily increase the size or change the shape of their muscles. It is injected deeply into the muscle and consists of 85% oil, 7.5% lidocaine, and 7.5% alcohol. Synthol is used to enlarge the volume of small groups of muscles, such as the triceps, biceps, deltoids, and calf muscles. However, the use of synthol can cause serious drawbacks, such as muscle deformities and damage to nerves, oil embolic of the pulmonary, occlusion of the pulmonary artery, myocardial infarction, cerebral stroke, and infectious complications. Synthol is legal and relatively easy to purchase, especially online, but it has no medical value and does not improve muscle strength. Instead, it expands muscle tissue, leaving muscles large but damaged and not any stronger. Surgery is the only option to remove synthol, and scarring may be permanent.
