Spiriva is a brand-name prescription drug that is used long-term to improve breathing in people with certain respiratory conditions. It is available in two forms: Spiriva HandiHaler and Spiriva Respimat, which have different FDA-approved uses. Here are the uses of Spiriva:
-
Spiriva Respimat: It is a long-term, once-daily, prescription medicine used to control symptoms of chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) by relaxing the muscles around the airways so that they open up and you can breathe more easily. It is also a long-term, once-daily, prescription maintenance treatment of asthma for people 6 years and older.
-
Spiriva HandiHaler: It is used to prevent bronchospasm (narrowing of the airways in the lungs) in adults with COPD (chronic obstructive pulmonary disease), including bronchitis and emphysema. It is not for use in children.
Spiriva contains the active drug tiotropium bromide, which belongs to a class of drugs called anticholinergic agents. It works by relaxing the air passages that carry air to and from the lungs, making it easier for you to breathe. It begins to act within 30 minutes after use and the effect should last a full day. If you have any questions about why this medicine has been prescribed for you, ask your doctor.
