A rebus crossword is a type of crossword puzzle where solvers are asked to write more than one letter in a square, which is called a rebus element. A rebus element can be a letter, number, symbol, word, or group of letters that need to be written inside a single square. In a rebus crossword, the rebus element can be anything that gets entered in a square thats not a single letter of the alphabet. For example, a rebus element can be a picture or symbol that represents a word or phrase, or it can be a word or group of letters that need to be written inside a single square. Rebuses are used extensively as a form of heraldic expression as a hint to the name of the bearer. In crossword puzzles, rebuses are sometimes used to cram more than one letter or symbol into a single box. Solvers can enter the Across entry first, followed by the Down entry, if more than one rebus exists in a square.
