Premenstrual Dysphoric Disorder (PMDD) is a severe form of premenstrual syndrome (PMS) that causes physical and emotional symptoms every month during the week or two before your period. Symptoms usually go away two to three days after your period starts. The symptoms of PMDD are so severe that women have trouble functioning at home, at work, and in relationships during this time. PMDD is a mental health condition listed in the DSM-5 as a "depressive disorder". To diagnose PMDD, your healthcare provider will look for five or more PMDD symptoms, including one mood-related symptom. Your provider will rule out or diagnose other conditions such as anxiety, depression, or reproductive disorders. Your healthcare provider may recommend one or more treatments to help manage PMDD, including self-care tips, medications, or therapy.
