NewsClick is an English-language news website that was founded in 2009 by Prabir Purkayastha, an editor of the website. NewsClick is an independent and critical outlet with a focus on “progressive movements” . Recently, NewsClick has been under investigation for alleged foreign investment norms violation and China links. The Enforcement Directorate (ED) has alleged that NewsClick had received illegal funding from China, routed through the US. The ED had searched NewsClick’s premises in February 2021 as part of its probe into foreign remittances allegedly received between 2018 and 2021. The Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) has also lodged an FIR against NewsClick, alleging that the news website violated foreign funding regulations under the Foreign Contribution Regulation Act. The probe agency carried out raids at two locations linked to the website’s founder and editor Prabir Purkayastha on Wednesday morning. NewsClick has denied the allegations and has stated that it is an independent news website that does not propagate Chinese propaganda on its website. Amnesty International India has condemned the arrests of NewsClick founder Prabir Purkayastha and HR head Amit Chakravarty under the Unlawful Activities (Prevention) Act (UAPA) after a series of raids on the homes and offices of several journalists associated with the digital news media on Tuesday in Delhi and Mumbai.
