Benjamin "Bibi" Netanyahu is an Israeli politician who has been serving as the prime minister of Israel since December 2022, having previously held the office from 1996 to 1999 and again from 2009 to 2021. He is the chairman of the Likud party. Netanyahu was born in Tel Aviv in 1949 and grew up in Jerusalem. He spent some of his high school years in the United States, where his father, the historian Benzion Netanyahu, taught and conducted historical research. Netanyahu enlisted in the Israeli military in 1967 and served in an elite unit of the Israeli army, Sayeret Matkal. He took part in several operations, including the rescue of hostages in a hijacked plane at the Tel Aviv airport in 1972. He later studied at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, taking time out to fight in the Yom Kippur War in Israel in 1973.
