Kratom is a tropical evergreen tree in the coffee family, native to Southeast Asia, including Thailand, Indonesia, Malaysia, Myanmar, and Papua New Guinea. Kratom is also known as Mitragyna speciosa and is a herbal leaf from a tree of the Rubiaceae family. Kratom leaves contain many chemical compounds known as bioactive alkaloids that can affect the body, with the most well-studied compounds being mitragynine and 7-hydroxymitragynine. Kratom has opioid properties and some stimulant-like effects, and it is often used by workers in laborious or monotonous professions to stave off exhaustion, as a mood-enhancer, and painkiller. Kratom is also used for chewing, smoking, and tea. However, the safety problems related to its use are concerning, and the US FDA has warned consumers to avoid using products containing kratom. Kratom is banned in some states and countries due to serious safety concerns.
