In a hospital, IPD stands for Inpatient Department, while OPD stands for Outpatient Department. The main difference between the two is that patients are admitted to the hospital for at least 24 hours in the IPD, while in the OPD, patients are not required to be admitted to the hospital and can receive treatment without staying overnight. The cost of IPD is generally higher than that of OPD. In the IPD, patients are often discharged only when they are medically fit to do so, while in the OPD, hospital or clinic visits may be more frequent. Consultations, minor surgical and diagnostic procedures, follow-ups, and treatments that do not require the patient to stay in the hospital come under OPD services. On the other hand, patients undergoing treatment that requires them to stay in the hospital for more than 24 hours are admitted to the IPD.
