Functional neurological disorder (FND) is a medical condition in which there is a problem with the functioning of the nervous system and how the brain and body sends and/or receives signals, rather than a structural disease process such as multiple sclerosis or stroke. FND can encompass a wide variety of neurological symptoms, such as limb weakness, movement disorders, sensory symptoms, blackouts, seizures, and problems with memory. The exact cause of FND is unknown, but it may be triggered by a neurological disorder or by a reaction to stress or psychological or physical trauma. FND can be difficult to diagnose, but it is typically diagnosed based on positive signs and symptoms in the history and examination during consultation of a neurologist. Treatment for FND may include physical therapy, cognitive-behavioral therapy, and medication. Early diagnosis and treatment, especially education about the condition, can help with recovery.
