Combined type ADHD is a neurobehavioral condition that affects the brain and behavior. It is one of three presentations of ADHD, and it occurs when an individual has both inattentive and hyperactive-impulsive symptoms. To be diagnosed with combined type ADHD, a person needs to display at least five symptoms of hyperactivity/impulsivity and at least five symptoms of inattention. Some symptoms must have been present before the age of 12, and they must be present for at least six months and inappropriate for the persons developmental level. Examples of inattentiveness symptoms include struggling to follow instructions, having difficulty waiting your turn, and being forgetful in daily activities. Examples of hyperactivity-impulsivity symptoms include fidgeting, interrupting others, and having difficulty sitting still. Treatment for combined type ADHD usually involves both medication and behavioral therapy and targets symptoms of inattention and hyperactivity/impulsivity.
