CID stands for Criminal Investigation Department, which is a specialized branch of a police force that deals with investigations into serious crimes. CID detectives work in plain clothes and investigate a broad spectrum of criminal investigations, including deaths, sexual assault, armed robbery, burglaries, fraud, computer crimes, and counter-drug operations. They provide criminal investigative support to the Patrol Division and work closely with other local, state, federal, and military law enforcement agencies to counter and investigate the most serious crimes. CID officers do not work normal shift patterns and are often required to work long and irregular hours. The CID is responsible for carrying out investigations into crimes, including murder and organized crime. The CID is also responsible for providing criminal intelligence and forensic investigative support for the Patrol Division. The CID is an independent federal law enforcement agency consisting of nearly 3,000 personnel assigned to 124 world-wide locations, responsible for felony criminal investigations and operations; war crimes and terrorism investigations, criminal intelligence collection and analysis; cybercrime investigations and operations; multi-dimensional forensic support; and protective service operations for the Secretary of Defense, Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff and other high-risk personnel.
