Catnip, or Nepeta cataria, is a common herb that is a member of the mint family. It is native to southern and eastern Europe, the Middle East, Central Asia, and parts of China, but is widely naturalized. Catnip is known for its intense attraction to about two-thirds of cats, and is used as a recreational substance for pet cats. Catnip contains the feline attractant nepetalactone, which triggers a response in some cats, inducing behaviors like rolling, rubbing, purring, and heightened playfulness. These behaviors can include overt signs of affection, relaxation, and happiness, or active behaviors such as playfulness or sometimes even aggression. For cats that have a positive experience with catnip, it can help reduce anxiety and even relieve pain. Catnip is not harmful for kittens, but most cats won’t react to catnip until they are 6 months to 1 year of age. Catnip can be administered to cats using a few different methods, including fresh catnip, dried catnip, and catnip sprays. Catnip is also an ingredient in some herbal teas and is valued for its sedative and relaxant properties.
