Baumwolle is the German word for cotton. It is a soft, fluffy staple fiber that grows in a boll, or protective case, around the seeds of the cotton plants of the genus Gossypium in the mallow family Malvaceae. Baumwolle is a woven textile made from the fiber of the cotton plant. The name Baumwolle translates literally as "tree wool" in German, which reflects the fact that cotton was originally thought to be produced by plant-borne sheep due to its similarities to wool. Baumwolle is sometimes listed on garment labels, such as those of Lands End.
