Antisemitism is prejudice against or hatred of Jews. It is the worlds oldest hatred, dating back thousands of years, and has taken on different forms over time. Antisemitism can take many forms, including violent attacks, discrimination, and hateful rhetoric. It is often less evident than other forms of hatred, making it difficult to recognize. The Holocaust, during which Nazis and their collaborators murdered 6 million Jews, is the worst example of antisemitism in history. However, antisemitism also exists in daily life, such as in the form of hateful memes, jokes, and hashtags on social media, or the defacing of school buildings with swastikas.
It is important to note that criticism of Israel similar to that leveled against any other country cannot be regarded as antisemitic. The International Holocaust Remembrance Alliance (IHRA) has adopted a non-legally binding working definition of antisemitism, which defines it as "a certain perception of Jews, which may be expressed as hatred toward Jews. Rhetorical and physical manifestations of antisemitism are directed toward Jewish or non-Jewish individuals and/or their property, toward Jewish community institutions and religious facilities".
