A WPS file is a type of text file that uses the ".wps" extension and is a word processing document created in Microsoft Works. WPS files can be opened using Microsoft Word on Windows computers, a third-party WPS viewer on Mac OS X, or with an online file converter or file viewer website. WPS files are mainly used to store formatted text files in Microsoft Works, which was an office suite that preceded Microsoft Word. WPS files are similar to Word documents but do not allow advanced formatting and are not compatible with MS Office. Although WPS files can be converted with MS Offices free MS Works converter or several standalone WPS converter tools and libraries available, MS has discontinued any support for the WPS format since 2006, so WPS files should be considered a legacy that needs to be converted to a newer format.
