The "Shot in the Dark" is a game mechanic introduced in Survivor 41. It is a six-sided die that gives castaways a one-in-six chance of receiving safety at tribal council in exchange for them not voting. Each castaway receives this die at the start of their season, and it may only be played once, ultimately losing its power at the final seven (or the final six in Survivor 42) . The player must be eligible to vote to begin with, and the player must have the die in their possession at tribal council. If a player chooses to play their Shot in the Dark, they forfeit their vote. The Shot in the Dark has been used by eight contestants so far, and only one of them was safe as a result of using it.
