A sequential transmission, also known as a sequential manual transmission or sequential gearbox, is a type of non-synchronous manual transmission used mostly for motorcycles and racing cars. It is similar to a manual transmission, but with some differences. In a car with a manual transmission, you shift the car through the gears in an “H” pattern. With a sequential gearbox, you shift gears by clicking a lever up or down with your toe or by using electronic paddle-shifters mounted behind the steering wheel. A sequential manual transmission is unsynchronized, which means that it allows the driver to select either the next gear or the previous gear, but it prevents the driver from deliberately "skipping" gears. This restriction avoids accidentally selecting the wrong gear. Sequential transmissions are rarely used in passenger cars due to their high rate of wear and abrupt shifting action. However, they are commonly used in racing cars because they give the driver several important advantages, such as faster shifts and smoother shifting and performance.
