A safety corridor is a section of road that has been identified as a high priority for safety improvements due to the number of fatal and severe accidents that occur there. The concept of a safety corridor exists under many different names, such as Vision Zero Safety Corridor, Priority Safety Corridor, Pedestrian Safety Corridor, or High Injury Network, depending on the agency. The goal of a safety corridor is to maximize safety improvements by concentrating crash mitigation strategies and projects on the areas in the road network that have the highest risk profile for severe crashes.
In some states, such as Virginia, a highway safety corridor is a special segment of a highway that has been identified by data analysts and approved by a majority vote of the Safety Service Patrol Advisory Committee. The aim of a highway safety corridor is to address highway safety problems through law enforcement, education, and safety enhancements. Highway safety corridor signs are posted at the beginning of a designated zone and after every interchange entry to indicate that increased enforcement and safety messaging will be present in the area. If drivers obey speed limits and other driving laws, there will be fewer crashes and better driving behavior, making the road safer for everyone.
