A neurologist is a medical doctor who specializes in diagnosing, treating, and managing disorders of the brain, spinal cord, and nerves. They are highly trained clinicians who know the anatomy, function, and conditions that affect the nervous system. Neurological conditions include Alzheimers disease, Parkinsons disease, multiple sclerosis, stroke, epilepsy, and headaches, among others. Neurologists perform a thorough neurological exam to diagnose complex conditions through detailed history and physical examination, including testing of mental status, vision, speech, strength, sensation, coordination, reflexes, and gait. They also perform various procedures, including LP and NCS/EMG, intraoperative brain and spine monitoring, autonomic testing, endovascular procedures, botulinum toxin injections, skin and muscle biopsies, and more. Neurologists do not perform surgery, and if one of their patients requires surgery, they refer them to a neurosurgeon. If you or a loved one has unexplained symptoms that could be related to the brain or nervous system, your doctor may recommend a neurological exam with a specialist.
