3D Touch is a hardware-based feature introduced by Apple in iPhone 6s and 6s Plus devices running iOS 9 that perceives the amount of force a user puts on the touch screen to activate different functions. It senses how much pressure you use when touching the screen and can be used to access a variety of shortcuts, options, and menus to help you use your phone more quickly and efficiently. Here are some key features of 3D Touch:
-
Peek and Pop: This feature allows you to preview various items like emails, links, and photo thumbnails without having to leave the current page. When you firmly press and hold an item, a preview of the content will appear. If you press harder, the content will "pop" into view.
-
Quick Actions: With 3D Touch, you can access a menu of quick actions by pressing firmly on things like app icons, photos, links, and contacts. These are shortcut actions that allow you to quickly perform tasks without opening the app.
-
Multitasking View: Pressing on the left side of the screen enables multitasking view, which allows you to swipe between open apps to find the one you need.
-
Haptic Feedback: 3D Touch relies on a taptic engine to provide the necessary feedback for your touch. All you have to do to trigger this feature is press hard enough on an icon or other element that works with 3D Touch, and then youll feel a slight vibration to confirm your action.
3D Touch is not available on all iPhones, as a different technology called Haptic Touch was developed for the iPhone XR and newer.
