Nancy Kerrigan, an American figure skater, was attacked on January 6, 1994, at the U.S. Figure Skating Championships in Detroit. As she was walking through a corridor after a practice session, she was struck on her right lower thigh with a police baton by Shane Stant, an assailant hired by Jeff Gillooly, the then-husband of her rival Tonya Harding. The attack was intended to prevent Kerrigan from competing in the Championships and the upcoming Winter Olympics, thereby improving Harding's chances. Kerrigan was injured and forced to withdraw from the U.S. Championships but recovered in time to compete in the 1994 Winter Olympics, where she won the silver medal. Harding was later banned for life from competitive figure skating due to her involvement in the attack and its cover-up
. After the incident, Kerrigan toured and performed with ice skating troupes such as Champions on Ice and Broadway on Ice. In 2017, she also appeared as a contestant on Dancing with the Stars
