Lynn Messer was a 52-year-old woman who disappeared on July 8, 2014, from her home near Bloomsdale, Missouri. Her husband, Kerry Messer, woke up at around 4:00 a.m. to find that Lynn was not in bed beside him. He looked around the house for her and noticed that all of her personal belongings, including her ID, passport, wallet, cell phone, car keys, and the walking boot she used to help protect her broken toe, were still in the house along with a possible suicide note. It was later revealed that Lynn had left a note prior to her disappearance, but the notes contents were not revealed by Kerry Messer. In a subsequent interview, he made public a portion of the note. The full note had previously been provided to Sheriffs personnel, but Kerry said only that "It was some kind of note of finality, but I dont know what that means and to this day I dont understand it." He also said that "the first line was an apology".

Lynn Messers disappearance generated national news coverage. On November 1, 2016, her remains were found on the edge of the farm where she had lived. The medical examiner determined that her body had remained in the same spot since the night of her disappearance. The cause of her death was not immediately clear, but the medical examiners office ruled out foul play.

New developments in the case came to light during a vigil in 2019, but it is unclear what those developments were.
