After betraying Jesus for thirty pieces of silver, Judas Iscariot experienced deep remorse. According to the Gospel of Matthew, upon realizing that Jesus was condemned, Judas tried to return the money to the chief priests and elders, confessing his sin of betraying innocent blood. When they refused to take the money back, Judas threw it into the temple and then went away and hanged himself
. The Book of Acts provides a somewhat different account, stating that Judas used the money to buy a field, and then he fell headlong, his body burst open, and his intestines spilled out. This field became known as the "Field of Blood," a name also mentioned in Matthew's account referring to the purchase made with Judas's betrayal money
. In summary, the traditional understanding is that Judas died by suicide, hanging himself out of guilt for betraying Jesus.
