The surgery was due to a torn UCL ligament that developed after he experienced discomfort in his elbow during spring training. Since then, Cole has been making progress in his recovery and began a throwing program in August 2025. He has recently been seen pitching in sessions at Yankee Stadium, showing hopeful signs of returning to form. His expected return is projected for around May 2026, about 14 months after surgery, aiming to bolster the Yankees' pitching rotation for the next season. During the 2025 season and playoffs, Cole also played a mentoring role for younger pitchers on the team despite being sidelined from active play.
