When a female cat is "in heat," it means that she is fertile and ready to mate. A cats first heat usually happens when she hits puberty at six to ten months old, and her estrus cycle will usually last four to five days. During this time, female cats may display several signs and symptoms, including:
- Vocalization: Female cats may wail, moan, or meow more than usual while they are in heat. Their cries may sound distressed and may even keep you up at night.
- Restlessness: Female cats may be more restless and unable to relax or get comfortable.
- Mating position: Female cats may stick their buttocks in the air and move their tail to one side, which is the mating position.
- Affectionate behavior: Female cats may become more affectionate and rub up against people, objects, and other animals.
- Urination: Female cats may urinate more or even spray on surfaces when in heat.
If you do not want your female cat to become pregnant, it is important to make sure she does not have access to intact male cats. This could mean separation of cats in your home if you have both, or making sure she has no chance of escaping from your home. It is recommended to have female cats spayed to prevent unwanted pregnancies and to avoid the discomfort and behavioral changes associated with being in heat.
