What Does Hand, Foot, and Mouth Disease Look Like?
Hand, Foot, and Mouth Disease (HFMD) is a common viral illness, especially in young children. It typically presents with the following signs and symptoms:
Skin and Mouth Appearance
- Rash on Hands and Feet: Small, red spots or bumps that may blister. These are usually found on the palms of the hands and soles of the feet.
- Mouth Sores: Painful red spots or ulcers inside the mouth, including on the tongue, gums, and inside of the cheeks. These can make eating and drinking uncomfortable.
- Other Areas: Sometimes, the rash can also appear on the buttocks, legs, or arms.
Additional Symptoms
- Fever: Often one of the first signs.
- Sore Throat
- General Malaise: Feeling tired or unwell.
- Loss of Appetite
Visual Description
- The rash typically starts as flat or raised red spots, which may develop into small blisters.
- Mouth sores are usually small ulcers with a red border and a grayish center.
- The rash is not usually itchy but can be uncomfortable.
If you suspect HFMD, especially in young children, it’s a good idea to consult a healthcare provider for diagnosis and advice on symptom management. The illness usually resolves on its own within 7 to 10 days.
