Hamas is a militant movement and one of the Palestinian territories’ two major political parties. It governs more than two million Palestinians in the Gaza Strip, but the group is best known for its armed resistance to Israel. Hamas stands for Harakat al-Muqawamah al-Islamiyya, meaning Islamic Resistance Movement. Its goal is to liberate Palestine and to establish an Islamic State in the area that spans Israel, the West Bank, and the Gaza Strip. In 1988, Hamas published its charter, calling for the destruction of Israel and the establishment of an Islamic society in historic Palestine. In what observers called an attempt to moderate its image, Hamas presented a new document in 2017 that accepted an interim Palestinian state along the “Green Line” border established before the Six-Day War but still refused to recognize Israel. Hamas has a cultural wing, Dawah, and a military arm, Izz ad-Din al-Qassam Brigades. It has supporters across Palestine territories and in other countries of the Middle East. Iran provides it with material and financial support, and Turkey reportedly harbors some of its top leaders. Hamas also enjoys the backing of Iran and is part of a bloc comprising Iran, Syria, and Islamist group Hezbollah in Lebanon. All the members of the bloc oppose the US policy in the region. Hamas has carried out more than 80 suicide attacks in Israel, murdering approximately 1,000 Israelis. The escalations of rocket attacks on Israel not only aim to murder Israeli civilians, but they are also attempts by Hamas to rally more Palestinians to join their antisemitic movement and paint Hamas as the guardian of Palestinian rights.
