Clindamycin is an antibiotic used to treat a wide range of bacterial infections. It is effective against susceptible anaerobic bacteria, streptococci, pneumococci, and staphylococci. Common infections treated with clindamycin include:
- Lower respiratory tract infections such as pneumonia, empyema, and lung abscess
- Skin and skin structure infections including those caused by Streptococcus pyogenes and Staphylococcus aureus
- Gynecological infections like endometritis, tubo-ovarian abscess, pelvic cellulitis, and postsurgical vaginal cuff infection
- Intra-abdominal infections, including peritonitis and intra-abdominal abscesses
- Septicemia caused by susceptible bacteria
- Bone and joint infections, including acute hematogenous osteomyelitis
- Dental infections and used as prophylaxis against endocarditis
- Acne (topical form)
- Bacterial vaginosis and pelvic inflammatory disease
- Infections caused by methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA)
- Some cases of malaria in combination with quinine
It is often prescribed when penicillin is not a suitable option. Clindamycin works by stopping the growth of bacteria. It comes in oral, topical, injectable, and vaginal formulations. It is not effective against viral infections or meningitis and should be used only for infections caused by susceptible bacteria to prevent resistance development. Clindamycin is also used as an alternative treatment for infections in people allergic to penicillin.
