Cephalexin is an antibiotic used to treat a variety of bacterial infections. It belongs to the cephalosporin class of antibiotics and works by killing bacteria. The infections treated by cephalexin include:
- Respiratory tract infections such as pneumonia and bronchitis
- Ear infections (otitis media)
- Skin and soft tissue infections, including those caused by Staphylococcus aureus and Streptococcus pyogenes
- Bone infections
- Urinary tract infections (UTIs) and bladder infections
- Sinus infections
- Prostate infections
- Throat infections
It is effective against bacteria that cause these infections and is commonly prescribed for both adults and children over 1 year old. Cephalexin is taken orally in capsule, tablet, or liquid form and should be used for the full prescribed course to prevent antibiotic resistance
