An adult female horse is called a mare. Any female horse over the age of four years old falls into this category. Between the age of one-year-old and four years old, female horses are referred to as fillies. You may also hear a female horse called a broodmare or a dam as they reach breeding age. Keep in mind that for a young foal, the term “colt” can be genderless but the term “filly” always means female.
