Kindergarteners typically need the following items for school:
- Crayons (about 24 pack)
- Colored pencils
- Glue sticks (around 6-18)
- Beginner pencils (such as Ticonderoga beginner pencils)
- Regular #2 pencils
- Backpack (large enough to hold a lunch box, jacket, folder, and change of clothes)
- Lunch box or lunch bag that the child can open independently
- Reusable water bottle (labeled)
- Change of clothes in a labeled ziplock bag
- Tissue boxes
- Baby wipes and Clorox or disinfectant wipes (optional but often requested for the classroom)
- Safety scissors (kid-sized, blunt-tipped)
- Pencil case or supply pouch

- Folders (two-pocket)
- Indoor running shoes with hook and loop straps (no laces if possible)
Additionally, parents are sometimes asked to provide extra classroom supplies or contribute to communal items like baby wipes, paper towels, and tissues. Aside from supplies, children should ideally be toilet trained and able to dress themselves independently, including managing their jacket and shoes. They should also be able to eat without help and open/close lunch containers on their own.
