To renew your plates in Texas, you will need:
- Your vehicles license plate number and the last 4 digits of your Vehicle Identification Number (VIN) .
- Current proof of insurance.
- Proof of inspection.
- Payment of registration fees by cash, check, money order, or credit or debit card.
- If renewing in person, two government-issued, photo identifications (such as driver’s license, passport, or military identification) .
- If someone else is renewing your registration for you, they will need your Texas Department of Motor Vehicles renewal notice, Vehicle Identification Number (VIN) or license plate number, a completed Limited Power of Attorney for Eligible Motor Vehicle Transactions form (VTR-271), and proof of insurance that meets Texas’ minimum requirements.
There are several ways to renew your registration in Texas, including online, in person, or via mail. If renewing in person, you can go to a participating Travis County H-E-B or AAA location, visit one of the tax office locations, or use a Tax Office-authorized title service company. If renewing via mail, you will need to prepare your renewal notice, a copy of your Vehicle Inspection Report (VIR), proof of current liability insurance, and payment for the renewal, and send it to your County Tax Office via mail.
