To obtain a REAL ID in South Carolina, you need to provide the following original documents in person at an SCDMV branch:
- Proof of identity: a government-issued birth certificate or a valid U.S. Passport.
- Proof of Social Security number: Social Security card or W-2 form.
- Two proofs of current, physical South Carolina address: examples include a utility bill or bank statement dated within the last 90 days.
- Proof of legal name changes, if applicable: such as a marriage license or court order.
If you have a valid U.S. Passport with your current legal name that matches the Social Security Administration records and your two proofs of address, you may already have what is needed to get a REAL ID
. Additional notes:
- The REAL ID will have a gold star on it to indicate compliance.
- It is optional to get a REAL ID unless you plan to fly domestically or enter secure federal or military facilities after May 7, 2025.
- If you do not get a REAL ID, you must have another federally approved ID (e.g., valid U.S. Passport or military ID) for those purposes.
- If you have had a legal name change, bring the appropriate documents to prove it.
- If you are moving from out of state and do not have a current license, you must provide a driving record from your previous state
