Portuguese is the official language in ten countries and territories, collectively known as the Lusophone world. These countries are:

Brazil is the largest Portuguese-speaking country by population, with over 200 million speakers. Portugal is the birthplace of the language. Several African countries have Portuguese as an official language due to historical colonization, and East Timor and Macau also have Portuguese as an official or co-official language
. In addition to these countries, there are significant Portuguese-speaking immigrant communities in countries such as the United States, France, Canada, Luxembourg, and others, but Portuguese is not an official language there
