Hurricane Maria reached Category 5 on the Saffir-Simpson Hurricane Wind Scale when it made landfall on the island of Dominica. It later weakened slightly due to land interaction but remained a high-end Category 4 hurricane when it struck Puerto Rico. At its peak, Maria had maximum sustained winds of 175 mph and a minimum central pressure of 908 millibars, ranking it among the most intense Atlantic hurricanes on record. It made landfall in Puerto Rico as a Category 4 hurricane with winds of 155 mph.
