Area code 580 is located in most of southern and western Oklahoma, including cities such as Ada, Lawton, Enid, Ardmore, Elk City, and Ponca City. It was created by splitting from area code 405 on November 1, 1997, which was retained by the urban core of central Oklahoma, including Oklahoma City. The states other area codes, 539/918, serve the northeast, including Tulsa. With the majority of the old 405s landlines being in the Oklahoma City metropolitan area, the 1997 split made 580 one of the most thinly populated area codes in the nation. The 580 area code covers Western Oklahoma and is in the Central Time Zone.
