Wind turbine blades are typically made of fiberglass-reinforced polyester or epoxy, with carbon fiber or aramid (Kevlar) used as reinforcement material. The fiberglass material makes the blades lightweight for efficiency yet still durable enough to withstand storms. Wind turbine blades cannot be easily recycled due to the mixed nature of the blade material, which makes separating the plastics from the glass fibers to recycle into a workable fiberglass material difficult. However, companies like Carbon Rivers have developed a process to recover clean, mechanically intact glass fiber from decommissioned wind turbine blades, which can be upcycled into nonwoven fabrics, continuous textile yarns, automotive sheet molding compounds, and plastic injection molding pellets. Around 96% of a wind turbine is made from recyclable materials, including steel, copper, aluminum, and other precious metals.
