The British Values are a set of values that the UK government believes are important for children to learn in order to create a more cohesive and integrated society, as well as to protect children from extremist ideologies. The fundamental British Values are:

  • Democracy: This is about making decisions together and making sure that everyone has a voice and the right to express their opinion.

  • The rule of law: This means understanding the rules set in place for everyone and why they are important. Its also about following the rules to keep our society and our communities in order.

  • Individual liberty: This is about being able to live the life you want to lead without discrimination (as long as you respect others right to do so as well). This gives us the right to make our own choices.

  • Mutual respect and tolerance of different faiths and beliefs: This means treating others how you want to be treated, having respect for other people (even when they are different to you) and working together peacefully. It involves learning about other people and their religions, cultures and backgrounds. We have to listen to other peoples viewpoints and learn about diversity.
