The Whole Game System (WGS) is a legacy online platform used by The Football Association (FA) in England to manage grassroots football administration tasks such as player registration, club affiliation, referee reports, discipline handling, and match management. It centralizes and standardizes the administration of grassroots football across counties and leagues, including player registrations that last for a single season, handling notices of approach, transfers, and international clearances.
WGS requires unique email addresses for player registrations (especially for those 16 and over) to reduce duplicate records and to consolidate player and official histories in one database. It also supports multiple roles such as club secretaries and player registration officers to manage their teams, along with referee match reporting functions, such as entering squads, scores, and disciplinary cards.
However, the Whole Game System is being retired. From the 2024-2025 season, WGS functions are gradually being replaced by the new England Football Portals, which use modern technology and provide a better user experience across devices. The full shutdown of WGS was scheduled for the start of the 2025-2026 season, and as of August 1, 2025, WGS is no longer available.
In summary, the Whole Game System was a comprehensive, FA-run online administrative tool for grassroots football management in England, now replaced by a newer platform called England Football Portals for improved function and usability. It played a key role in centrally managing registrations, discipline, and other football administration at the grassroots level.
