Besides plant cells, other types of cells that have cell walls include:
- Fungal cells, whose cell walls are made of chitin.
- Algal cells, which have cell walls composed of various polysaccharides and glycoproteins.
- Bacterial cells, which have cell walls made of peptidoglycan.
- Archaeal cells, whose cell walls vary and may include glycoprotein S-layers or pseudopeptidoglycan.
These cell walls serve roles similar to plant cell walls, providing structural support, shape, and protection. However, the chemical composition of the cell wall differs significantly among these groups. For example, plant cell walls mainly contain cellulose, while bacterial walls contain peptidoglycan, and fungal walls contain chitin.
