The Green Bay Packers are from Green Bay, Wisconsin. They were founded in 1919 by Curly Lambeau and George Whitney Calhoun. The team was initially sponsored by the Indian Packing Company, which lent its name to the team. The Packers played against local teams in Wisconsin and Michigan before joining the National Football League in 1921. The Packers are unique in being the only publicly owned, nonprofit major league professional sports team in the United States, deeply rooted in the Green Bay community.
