Osama bin Laden died on May 2, 2011, when he was shot and killed by U.S. Navy SEAL operatives during a raid on his compound in Abbottabad, Pakistan. The operation, called Operation Neptune Spear, was a CIA-led mission ordered by President Barack Obama. Bin Laden was found unarmed on the third floor of his compound and was shot multiple times, including in the head and body. After the raid, his body was taken by U.S. forces for identification and was then buried at sea in accordance with Islamic law. This marked the significant achievement of killing the al-Qaeda leader responsible for numerous terrorist attacks including the September 11 attacks in the U.S.
