Mount Everest is the highest mountain in the world, reaching an elevation of 29,032 feet (8,849 meters). It is located on the border between Nepal and the Tibet Autonomous Region of China, lying on the crest of the Great Himalayas. The mountain is known by different names: in Tibetan, it is called Chomolungma, meaning "Goddess Mother of the World," and in Sanskrit, it is Sagarmatha, meaning "Peak of Heaven." The mountain was named Mount Everest in 1865 after Sir George Everest, a British surveyor general of India. Everest's summit is covered by rock-hard snow, with breathable oxygen at only about one- third of sea level, making it an extremely challenging climb. The mountain's shape is like a three-sided pyramid with distinct faces and ridges, including notable features such as the Khumbu Icefall on the Nepal side and the North Col on the Tibetan side. Climbers face hazards including altitude sickness, severe weather, and avalanches. The peak is surrounded by other notable mountains like Lhotse, Nuptse, and Changtse. Everest rises about 2 mm a year due to tectonic activity.
