To wash a sleeping bag properly, follow these general steps:

  1. Close all zippers and Velcro attachments and turn the sleeping bag inside out to protect the outer shell.
  2. Use a mild, non-biological detergent or a technical cleaner specifically designed for down or synthetic sleeping bags; avoid fabric softeners and bleach.
  3. For machine washing, use a front-loading washer on a gentle, cool or lukewarm cycle (around 30ÂșC), with an extra rinse cycle to remove detergent.
  4. For hand washing, soak the sleeping bag in lukewarm water with detergent, gently massage it without wringing or twisting, rinse multiple times until clean, and press out excess water.
  5. Tumble dry on low heat with clean tennis balls or dryer balls to help restore loft and prevent clumping; check and turn the bag regularly while drying.
  6. Store the sleeping bag in a clean, dry place after it is completely dry.

Avoid air drying down sleeping bags as this can take days and may cause mold. Synthetic bags can be air-dried but should be dried thoroughly.
