To wash a sleeping bag properly, follow these general steps:
- Close all zippers and Velcro attachments and turn the sleeping bag inside out to protect the outer shell.
- Use a mild, non-biological detergent or a technical cleaner specifically designed for down or synthetic sleeping bags; avoid fabric softeners and bleach.
- For machine washing, use a front-loading washer on a gentle, cool or lukewarm cycle (around 30ÂșC), with an extra rinse cycle to remove detergent.
- For hand washing, soak the sleeping bag in lukewarm water with detergent, gently massage it without wringing or twisting, rinse multiple times until clean, and press out excess water.
- Tumble dry on low heat with clean tennis balls or dryer balls to help restore loft and prevent clumping; check and turn the bag regularly while drying.
- Store the sleeping bag in a clean, dry place after it is completely dry.
Avoid air drying down sleeping bags as this can take days and may cause mold. Synthetic bags can be air-dried but should be dried thoroughly.
