To void a check:
- Use a blue or black permanent pen.
- Write the word "VOID" prominently in large capital letters across the front of the check.
- Avoid writing over the routing and bank account numbers at the bottom of the check as these are needed for identification.
- You can write "VOID" across the entire check or just on key areas such as the date, payee, amount, and signature lines.
- Do not sign the check.
- After voiding, record the check number and explanation in your check register.
- Dispose of the voided check securely by shredding or tearing it into small pieces if you do not want to keep it for records.
This process makes the check unusable for payment but keeps the necessary bank information visible for things like direct deposit setup or ACH transfers.
