To use a neti pot properly for nasal irrigation, follow these steps:
- Prepare the saline solution
- Use distilled, sterile, or previously boiled water that has cooled to lukewarm. Do not use tap water directly to avoid infection risks.
- Mix the water with a premixed saline packet or neti salt according to the package instructions
- Position yourself
- Lean over a sink and tilt your head at about a 45-degree angle to one side.
- Keep your mouth open and breathe through it during the process to avoid swallowing the saline
- Use the neti pot
- Place the spout of the neti pot gently into the upper nostril (the one closest to the ceiling). Avoid touching the septum.
- Pour the saline solution slowly so it flows through the upper nostril and drains out of the lower nostril, carrying mucus and debris with it
- Clear your nasal passages
- Once the neti pot is empty, remove it and lift your head upright.
- Gently blow your nose to clear out any remaining saline and mucus
- Repeat on the other side
- Tilt your head to the opposite side and repeat the process for the other nostril
- Clean your neti pot
- After each use, clean the neti pot thoroughly with antibacterial soap, 70% isopropyl alcohol, or distilled white vinegar.
- Rinse it with distilled water and let it air dry to prevent bacterial contamination
Safety tips:
- Always use safe water sources (distilled, sterile, or boiled).
- Use lukewarm water to avoid irritation.
- Stop use if you experience pain, stinging, or if symptoms worsen.
- Consult a doctor before using on children
This method helps clear nasal passages by flushing out mucus, allergens, and irritants, providing relief from congestion due to colds, allergies, or sinus infections
